Stop and Smell the Weeds

One weekend morning, my husband decided that he was going to spray our yard for weeds. As he explained to our daughters what he would be doing and what would happen as a result, I watched their faces fall. They were devastated because their daddy was going to spray and kill the dandelions. They were weeds, he explained, and they were not good for the garden or the yard.

In response, my three year old exclaimed, “No, Daddy, they are fairies!” My oldest chimed in as well, “But Daddy, they are pre…

Mental Health for the Remote Worker

The work world has changed, and it’s not going back to the way it was. I recently read an article by Marcus Schwantes called, “How Covid-19 Exposed 3 Big Flaws in the Way We Work.” In it, he cited the 2020 Employee Care Report from employee experience software company, Limeade. Here are just a few of the staggering statistics:

  • 44% of employees report feeling burned out.
  • A burned-out employee is twice as likely to try to convince a coworker to leave their job.
  • Millennials are twice as l…

Multi-tasking Can Kiss My A$$

Now that we’re all on video conferences all day long, you’ve probably had a moment recently where you were checking your email or browsing in other tabs or windows during a video call. Suddenly, you hear your name. You experience that “oh sh!t” moment, staring blankly at the screen as your mind scrambles to figure out what the heck everyone is talking about. It may even feel like your fellow meeting attendees somehow knew you weren’t engaged.

Similarly, when you’re only half paying attention to…

Put Your Oxygen Mask on First

If you’ve ever flown commercially, you’ve heard the preflight warnings about putting your oxygen mask on before assisting your child in putting on theirs. But it feels so counter-intuitive, doesn’t it? In today’s world, most parents believe their job is to do everything possible to provide an incredible and meaningful life for our children: send them to great schools, enroll them in excellent extracurriculars, teach them how to swim and play the piano, make sure they spend time with friends. We’…

May My Normal Life R.I.P.

In case you have not figured it out already, life looks a little different today than it did earlier this year. Somewhere around March 2020, many of us morphed from professionals into teachers, remote workers, therapists, future predictors, and pop tart hoarders, all while trying not to freak the heck out that the entire world was shutting down.

Sometimes, I think about what I would tell my old self if I had the opportunity to call pre-COVID Bunny, circa February 2020. Maybe it would go somethi…

COVID's Impact on Mental Health // How Quarantining Is Impacting Companies

When COVID happened, many companies responded by sending teammates home to work remotely. Now, telework options are exploding with no end in sight with big-name companies like Google, Capital One, and Zillow leading the charge. For some, this technological age has been a long time coming. But for many, the shift has been hard.

THE TELEWORK CHALLENGE

Though teleworking during the pandemic has successfully kept workers apart physically, protecting their physical health, it has also led to high lev…

Clarity Break

Back in January, I updated my autoresponder to let everyone know I was taking the month off. I specifically shared that the time away was for me to build an overarching strategic plan for the next year as well as plan ahead for each of my companies for the next three years. Not knowing at the time that just a few months later the whole world would be changing, I returned from this time away feeling refreshed and recharged. Obviously much has changed since then, but I still strongly feel the valu…

Where Is Your Head?

Do you remember the old Superman comics where the only noticeable difference between Clark Kent and Superman was a pair of glasses? Of course, his bright leotard also comes to mind, but all he had to do was hop into a phone booth, and then, despite walking out with the same facial structure, hair, and even the same voice, suddenly no one knew who he was.

I always wondered about this until recently, when my daughter was watching a cartoon where the little girl transforms herself with the use of a…

What We Want

Last week, I did an exercise where I wrote “What do you want?” at the top of a page. My brain-dumped list of answers turned into a personal article, which is now posted on Medium (in case you’d like to read about my vision for the world, as we now know it).

I found this little exercise both revealing and cathartic. Especially in the professional world, but really in either personal or professional life, it is so easy to get caught up in day-to-day metrics: P&L details, annual growth goals, compet…

Go Where You Are Wanted

Last week, I had the pleasure of trying to invest energy back into a relationship that had gone through a rough patch last year. Prior to the rough patch, the relationship meant a lot to me, so I went into the conversation with an open heart. I allowed myself to be vulnerable and hopeful. Unfortunately, not only did it not go well. I am pretty sure the childish reaction I received in response to my efforts means we’ve moved well beyond the past, to a point where we may no longer have a chance at…
